PODCAST: Faye Hollands – If you can, you must

In 2020, the world was shaken by the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought about countless challenges and tragedies. But even in the midst of this crisis, there were people who rose up to inspire and support others, shining a light in the darkness. One such person is Faye Hollands and her daughter Charli. In May of 2020, Faye and her family received a phone call that every parent dreads, hearing that your child has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

Childhood cancer takes the life of 3 children every week in Australia and 70% of surviving children suffer long-term side effects from their treatment. As a 9 year old, Charli endured harrowing experienced that inspired Faye to play a role in the funding of vital research to combat childhood cancer – This is how the ‘Shine Like Charli’, a non-for profit organisation founded by Faye, was born. Over the last 2.5 half years the Shine Like Charli foundation has raised over $280,000 for charities supporting childhood cancer and the community has rallied around the cause to make a difference. The Shine Like Charli Foundation is a shining example of how one person’s determination and compassion can make a significant impact in the world.

Last year the inaugural ‘Shine Like Charli Charity Ball’ raised $88,000 for childhood cancer charities and it is on again next month. If you would like to support this incredible cause, you can purchase tickets to the Shine Link Charli ball which will be taking place Saturday 24th June 2023 at the Novotel Hotel, North Wollongong.

All funds raised will be going to these incredible charities to support and combat childhood cancer

  • Childrens Cancer Institute – Children’s Cancer Institute is the only independent medical research institute in Australia wholly dedicated to curing childhood cancer.
  • Illawarra Convoy – Supporting families with children facing life-threatening illnesses in the Illawarra

You can purchase tickets here

Can’t make the ball but would love to make a donation? You can follow the link, select ‘get tickets’ and enter the amount you’d like to donate.

At the Children’s Cancer Institute, the incredible team work to understand the nature of the disease. Countless hours of lab research is required to build a picture of each type of childhood cancer.

“Analysing a child’s cancer at a genomic level can lead to a whole new way of understanding that child’s cancer. This can lead to a more accurate diagnosis, prognosis and risk stratification, and in some cases, a refined treatment approach.” – Professor Michelle Haber AM, Executive Director of Children’s Cancer Institute.

While around 85% of children diagnosed with cancer will survive, this means that around 15% will not. The Childhood Cancer Institute through research are able to improve survival rates and reduce the side effects of treatment. Their research is conducted by leading scientists and clinicians in Australia and around the world. The Institute’s research has led to many significant breakthroughs in the treatment of childhood cancer, including new targeted therapies that can specifically target cancer cells and immunotherapies.
