Best Date Night Ideas in Wollongong

We asked our team to share their favourite Illawarra date nights. If you’re after some inspiration for things to do in Wollongong, check out these great recommendations.

“I love to pack up a picnic rug, grab a bottle of wine, get a takeaway pizza, and go and sit up at Sandon Point on the grass and watch the sunset”

Jess Lee, EA/Senior Campaign Coordinator

We experience some truly breathtaking sunsets here in the Illawarra as the sun goes down over the escarpment, so it’s no surprise this was a top pick for a lot of our team. Jess loves to watch the sunset from
Sandon Point, but other popular spots include Killalea State Park better known as The Farm, Bald Hill Lookout, Bushrangers Bay, Top Deck or Wollongong Botanic Gardens. In regards to takeaway pizza – if you’re trying to impress a date with something a bit more gourmet than Domino’s, we’d recommend trying Kneading Ruby, Da Orlando, Figtree Gourmet Kitchen, Woonona Pizza Kitchen or Franco Pizza Bar which are some of the best local pizza places around Wollongong.

“Kneading Ruby is always good for a date. I’d also recommend video games at B.Lucky & Sons, the Sunset Cinema or a picnic at either Wollongong Botanic Gardens or Illawarra Rhododendron Gardens”

– Ryan Unwin, Senior Content Creator

An activity is always a great idea for a date because it gives you something fun to do and talk about. If you go to
B.Lucky & Sons you can also make a night of it with mini golf and drinks at Holy Moley which is right next door. The botanic gardens are a bit of a hidden gem, perfect for those looking for a quiet and peaceful spot in nature.

“I love going to see live music around Wollongong or enjoying fish and chips while
watching the sunset at the beach – always with a stop at Bubbleberry for frozen yoghurt on the way home!”

Josie Doyle, Creative Associate

Wollongong has an awesome live music scene with a range of fantastic venues including
La La La’s, Beaches Hotel, Waves, Anita’s Theatre, Unibar, every Friday night at Towradgi Beach Hotel or chill Sunday afternoons at North Gong Hotel. There’s always something on and we recommend keeping your eye on The Fold Illawarra or Yours & Owls to know what’s coming up.

“A picnic by the harbour watching the sunset over the escarpment and a swim in the sea”

– Lottie Richardson, Sales Associate

Wollongong Harbour is a popular place to relax while watching yachts coming in to anchor, meandering to the lighthouse on the Blue Mile, eating great fish and chips from
Levendi and going for a refreshing dip in the ocean pool. No wonder this is Lottie’s favourite!

“The Imperial at Clifton has amazing views, a great atmosphere if you like heritage and modern, yummy food and great staff there. The best thing too is catching the free shuttle bus so you can enjoy a drink or two!”

– Kerrie Rushworth, Senior Asset Manager

If you’re a pub food connoisseur or love a cold drink with a view, you’ve got to try
The Imperial at Clifton. Back in the day, Clifton was a popular mining village and when the hotel was established in 1884 the population was close to 1000 residents (the 2023 population is now just 30). After the mine closed in 1991, the hotel remained open but it was undoubtedly the end of an era as most of its patrons left to find work elsewhere. Officially closing in 2002, it remained untouched for almost 20 years before being recently renovated and reopening in 2021. It is now an iconic venue retaining many historical features and offering a restaurant, cafe and events space.

“If you’re a foodie, dinner at Santino is an absolute must (you must try the eggplant gratinato spatchcock). If you’re still hungry, back it up at Night Parrot for some incredible dumplings, then finish with a nightcap at the Black Cockatoo. Stretchy pants are essential!”

– Jordy Woolley, Creative Director

If you’re after a cool, low-key and moody vibe for your date – Jordy’s recommendations are perfect.
Santino is a modern Italian restaurant located in the cool Melbourne-esque Globe Lane which was recently awarded a coveted Chef’s Hat. The food and drinks are divine with an even better atmosphere. For those who don’t know, The Black Cockatoo is a hidden bar through the back of a coffee shop on Kembla street with a cool late night vibe. Our team also actually enjoyed a night celebrating the 2021 REA Awards Night at the Night Parrot which offers Asian inspired street food and a great drinks menu.

“I love all the beautiful bush walks around the Illawarra, there’s always something new to discover”

– Erin McPhillips, Business Development Manager

People who love the outdoors and adventure will never be bored in Wollongong. There are so many beautiful activities and bush walks like Sublime Point Lookout, the Mount Keira Ring Track, Maddens Falls, Brokers Nose or Wodi Wodi. If you’re the go big or go home type, take your date skydiving at
Skydive Australia

We hope these have helped you find the inspiration for your next date or weekend plans. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook for more local recommendations!
