South Coast Spaces: Ryder Built x The Eucalypts

Welcome to Season 2 of South Coast Spaces! The South Coast Spaces series celebrates inspired design from industry leaders and emerging designers, builders and architects along the South Coast of New South Wales.

This season, South Coast Spaces is back and better than ever with a curated lineup of elevated architecture and design projects we hope will inspire. In this episode, Troy McNeice sits down with Luke Ryder from Ryder Built to chat about their recently completed project ‘The Eucalypts’.

Read on to find out more about how this space came to life.

At the heart of this project is a symbiotic relationship built between the team at Ryder Built and House of Planning, which has allowed for the collaboration of many local masters to contribute to the final product. Together the team at Ryder Built, House of Planning, Maven Home and Paiano Design bring their flair to a space that feels like a holiday from the moment you walk in. Defined by the team as “coastal living at an elevated level”, the project embodies the brief in both concept and its commanding height.

Wanting to optimise the site and its opportunistic views, The Eucalypts is orientated in a way that interacts with its surrounding landscape and this underpins the entire design brief of the project. Capturing the glimmering ocean and sweeping escarpment views was a priority from the outset and paved the way for design features that enhanced the goals of the client. With a focal point being to encapsulate the views, a rooftop terrace was conceptualised, adding elevation and ultimately the commanding presence on the block.

During the planning phase, the team sought to curate a space that evoked a sense of calm, relaxation and almost putting its occupants in a holiday state of mind. Being that the pandemic was in its height at the time of the build, the need for the space to double as a retreat became integral to the execution. Many home makers found the same need to improve their spaces and this further contributed to high demand and increased cost for building materials which is still being seen today.

The design has worked to not only make the most of the everyday ritual within the space but also provides the ultimate backdrop for entertaining. Each level of the home provides a stage that is set for entertainment at its finest, with outdoor spaces for guests and to enjoy on each of the three levels.

The key to the experience of the home is the connection between the ocean and the materials used to reflect the landscape – Hues of blue and grey compliment the warmth of the oak flooring to cast this calm sense, with the dolomite marble being the hero of the space.

Arched curves throughout the design in the wall design, Venetian plastering and fluted marble tiling allow for further connection to the surrounds of The Eucalypts. In order to illuminate the vast space within the property, the raked ceiling encourages light to fill the interior and allows for gorgeously diffused natural light.
