Clifton

NSW 2515

Clifton is a historical Illawarra village located 21km north of Wollongong. The construction of the Coal Cliff Colliery in 1877 led to the origin of Clifton as a coal-mining hub in the 1880s. Many coal miners' cottage-style houses are still in use today.

Clifton has the best available parking if you’re looking to walk the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge. The 665 metre bridge along the Grand Pacific Drive was built in 2005 after the earlier collapse of Lawrence Hargrave Drive connecting Clifton and nearby Coalcliff. Boasting sparkling ocean views with an impressive escarpment backdrop, Clifton is an incredible vantage point for beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Clifton is notably home to both the Clifton School of Arts and the Imperial Hotel. The Clifton School of Arts was established in 1880 and has continued to be used as a community building since 1911. It was reported that the village population was close to 1000 residents when the Imperial Hotel was established in 1884, most of whom would frequent the local drinking hole. The Imperial Hotel remained open after the mine closed in 1991 but it was undoubtedly ‘the end of an era’ due to losing most of its patrons who had to find work elsewhere. Officially closing in 2002 after the collapse of Lawrence Hargrave Drive, it remained untouched for almost 20 years before being recently renovated and reopened as The Imperial at Clifton in 2021. It is now an iconic venue retaining many historical features and offering a restaurant, cafe and events space which is popular with Illawarra residents and Sydney tourists alike.
